Kevin Gavin

My hero is my dad. His name is Kevin Gavin. He was born in Port Huron, Michigan. His favorite color is red. He was the last of 6 children! When he was born his brother was in college! He loves to cook organic and healthy foods. He loves to read books about philosophy, poetry, and art and can read in 7 different languages. He is the 6th grade A team basketball coach. My dad and I enjoy doing many things together. We enjoy playing catch in the park and watching all kinds of sports together. He likes all of the Michigan and all of the Detroit teams. We recently purchased a pool table to go in our attic. We play pool at least once every day! My dad teaches Latin at SCDS for the 7-12 graders. He has been teaching here for almost 15 years! Finally, the yearbook was dedicated to him in 1999.

There are many things that make my dad a hero. He showed patriotism because he served two years in the Army. Luckily, there was no war during that time. My dad shows honesty when he holds the money for a non-profit movie business. He could just take all the money and walk away! He is also honest when he keeps all of my secrets I tell him. My dad shows responsibility when he does all of his grading as soon as he gets it. He shows intelligence because he got a Ph. D. in foreign languages. My dad shows caring when I hurt myself. He helps me get up and takes me to get help. He shows compassion when he helps kids that need help after school. He shows courage when he goes on crazy roller-coaster rides with me. Finally, he shows skill when he beats me in pool every single day! I would definitely classify my dad as a hero.

My dad is like and not like the Greek mythological heroes (he is mostly not like them). He is like Odysseus because he is very smart and tricky. He is also like Odysseus because he will do whatever it takes to get home (from school). He is not like the heroes because he doesn’t go out and kill people. Also, he is not a religious person like the heroes were. Finally, he isn’t recognized through the whole country. My dad might not be a hero to the ancient Greeks, but he is to me.
