Koua Thao

Hero, a term that is commonly used throughout today's literature and media. For many, a hero is just a person who fights for justice, but to me, a hero is more than that. A hero is a person who you look up to, someone who has gone through hell and back; someone like my dad.

As a child, my father was running for his life in Laos. He experienced many things which a child today should never face. As the Vietnam War was coming to a close, my father and his family sought refuge in a camp in Thailand. With the help of the United States and Thailand, Hmong refugees were able to come to America. My dad and his family were lucky enough to be chosen. Once he arrived here in America, he knew that the only way to survive was to get an education. Throughout his high school life, he had troubles with the English language but that didn't stop him from graduating in the top 10 of his class. He didn't just stop at a high school diploma, but he later got his Master's degree. Soon after recieving his Master's, he found a job for being a school social worker for MPS.

Today, at the age of 56, he is still alive and kicking. He never once gave up on life but instead he tackled everything that was thrown at him. His accomplishments and attitude is what makes him my hero and inspiration.
