Ken Wallace

by Brianna from Canada

A teacher, A friend, A veteran

On November 6, 2005, a little brown haired girl, age 11, ran into the front entrance of a little white church. She was excited for she knew this Remembrance Day Service was going to be special. Her mother had already explained that Ken Wallace was going to talk to her and her 13 year old brother about what happened to him when he was younger. She was waiting through the beginning of the service, singing with the congregation, counting off hymns and prayers, and participating in the special activities.

Finally, it was time to go back to Sunday School. She left the sanctuary and sat at the "big kids" table. Ken Wallace came back carrying a huge yellowish sack. He said everything in the sack was from World War II. Ken Wallace was a veteran as well as a father, grandfather and a great-grandfather. He was there because he believed the Lord had saved him. He showed his uniform and a nifty contraption which was a reversible cup, and told us some of his memories like when he was riding on top of a tank, he looked into the top of a building and stopped, a lady was standing there and she gave each person on Ken's team some tea.

Ken Wallace is the kindest veteran I've ever met. He likes to make jokes and he loves to support anything you do. He had to leave the war because he got hurt. He was the only country boy on his team, so he knew more about the wilderness than those city kids did.

Ken Wallace is my hero because he taught me everything I know about World War II. He also inspired me to do what I think is right and that it would probably be the best thing to do. He is a good example of veterans for he acts like a regular grandpa, only he is much, much more.

I am so thankful for everything Ken has taught me. If it weren't for him I probably wouldn't think about the war as much and wouldn't care about it as much. I'm so lucky to have met him, he has changed my life.
