Louis Braille

by Ravneet from Mountain House

There is a wonder in reading Braille that the sighted will never know: to touch words and have them touch you back.

Louis Braille was the inventor of braille. That is why he is my hero. He helped the blind in a BIG way. Without him the blind would have never gotten a chance to read.

What is braille? Braille is the way the blind read. You use your hands to feel the letters read. He shared his idea about braille, which he invented, with the blind.

Louis was born January 4, 1809 in Coupcray, France. He had an accident in his childhood. The accident didn't make him completely blind. The accident only made him blind in one eye. The accident was caused by an awl. He was cutting leather in his Dad's shop with an awl. The awl poked his eye. He was strong enough to handle the accident at the age of three. When he grew up to be a five years old, he was completely blind.

In his childhood, Louis's eyes didn't stop him from becoming a hero. He grew up reading books made for the blind. He learned all the braille alphabet. Louis died on January 6, 1852 at the age of 43, which was only two days after his birthday. He was forgotten for 2 years. He now rests in peace at Pantheon, Paris.

Louis Braille is my hero because without him people who are blind would not be able to read. Louis was a helpful person. He is an achiever because of his fantastic invention of braille. That is why Louis Braille is my hero.
