An important hero is Lydia Barrington Darragh. She was born in seventeen twenty-nine in Dublin, Ireland. She died on December twenty-eighth seventeen eighty-nine, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and she was married to William Darragh. They had nine kids but four died when they were young. Her hometown was in Dublin, Ireland and she was a Quaker who secretly fought for the Americans. When the British invaded Philadelphia, General William Howe demanded he use Lydia Darragh's house for a secret conference. She eavesdropped on the conversation and learned they were planning an attack on Washington's troops. On May fourth, seventeen seventy-seven, she left town saying that she was going to get flour but instead she went to the American camp. She met a soldier and told him about the attack coming. The Americans were ready to fight when the British attacked. The British were very surprised. An important event in Lydia Darragh's lifetime outside of the war was when she was kicked out of the Society of Friends. Since Lydia was a Quaker, her religion said they were refused to fight in wars. On August 29, 1783 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Lydia helped save George Washington's troop. Technically she was involved in the war. So she was kicked out and was no longer a Quaker. This is the main reason she was kicked out of the Society of Friends.
