Laura Secord

by Cecilia from Calgary

I made it. (I made it.)
I made it. (I made it.)

Laura Ingersoll Secord was born September 13th 1775 in the U.S.A. She grew up in Great Barrington and moved to Canada when she was 18. When Laura was eight her mother died, leaving her and four other siblings. Laura’s father re-married twice. Laura had 4 siblings. Their names were Mary, Caroline, Grace and Charles (died after 9 months).

The reason Laura Secord’s life was so remarkable is that she saved Canada and Mr. Fitzgibbon. If it weren’t for Laura, Canada would probably be a lot different right now. The reason I admire Laura Secord is that she was so brave risking her life just to deliver a message and she probably knew she could die. But she did it anyway just to save Canada. As I just mentioned Laura was so brave risking her life. She was so heroic knowing she could die. All that just to save Upper Canada. Laura must have been so determined to tell Mr. Fitzgibbon about the American attack. She had to be very strong to travel on foot for days to tell Mr. Fitzgibbon the message. Laura was a very thoughtful, smart and a caring person. For the War of 1812 Laura helped the wounded soldiers get better. Laura was a very courageous Canadian and was a huge lifesaver of Mr. Fitzgibbon. I think some of Laura’s huge life qualities were her bravery which helped her save Canada. She also had to be very strong to save Canada too. I think the most difficult trait was Laura’s determination because she probably got very tired trying to deliver the message and wanted to give up. I think the most helpful trait for Laura was her bravery because that probably what kept her going. Laura did not make any major mistakes or bad decisions. I think one of the lessons I learned was never give up. If you keep on trying you will succeed and another one was just keep trying till you get it. No, you should judge her for the things Laura did for her country not other countries.

I think a hero is a person who helps others. Laura Secord was a big hero to many Canadians. She is a hero to me because she saved so many lives just from telling Mr. Fitzgibbon about the American attack. If it weren’t for Laura, Canada would be a much different place right now. Laura is not simply just well known because she saved Canada from attack. Probably half the world knows her. Laura did not have a hero. Laura lived her last years somewhere in Canada (I don’t know exactly where). Laura is dead. She died of old age October 17 1868. Laura does not have any family members still alive. Laura had only won 1 award: she received an award for bravery in 1860. The reason I chose Laura Secord was that she saved Canada and I had never heard of her before. I learned so much about Laura Secord. I never knew that she would have three mothers. And before I started this project I new nothing about Laura Secord.
