Early Life - Leonardo da Vinci was born in the year 1452 in Vinci, Italy, 20 miles out of Florence, Italy. His caregivers were his mother Caterina, Ser Piero da Vinci, his father, and Andrea del Verrocchio. His father apprenticed Leonardo to Andrea del Verrocchio who was a painter, sculptor, and mechanical artist. In 1472, at age 20, he was admitted into a Company of Painters.
Innovations/Ideas - Leonardo da Vinci had many ideas for inventions. One idea was the airplane and another was the tank. He also had ideas for catapults, parachutes, and canons. He designed a tank so he could shoot canon balls at any angle. He was planning to use the airplane to get a bird's eye view of enemies. The parachute was going to be used for dropping silently through the air over enemy walls. The catapult was for throwing boulders over walls.
Impact of Innovation/Ideas - Leonardo da Vinci's ideas changed how people thought about defeating enemies and travel. Before Leonardo da Vinci created these inventions people fought war with swords and bows and arrows. Leonardo da Vinci changed war by inventing long range weapons like tanks and catapults that made people think about how to defeat enemies from a distance. The airplane made people think about traveling faster over long distances.
Leonardo da Vinci's innovations changed the way people live because they allow people to travel over great distances and trade goods from all over the world quickly. The tank changed how people decided to fight or not to fight. We see Leonardo da Vinci's ideas today because we use the airplane for transporting people and goods. We see the tank in war to dominate others. Also, we see the parachute that we use for fun and for saving people's lives. If Leonardo da Vinci had not created all these inventions we wouldn't have the parachute for fun and to save lives, we wouldn't have the tank to influence strategy in war, and we wouldn't have the airplane for transporting people and goods. People might still be trying to find ways to fly and fight wars with different weapons.
