Laura Ingalls Wilder (I drew this picture.) |
Have you ever heard of a strong, brave woman who believes in herself? Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder was born February 7, 1867 in Pepin, Wisconsin. She had three sisters Mary, Carrie and Grace. On August 25, 1885 Laura married Almanzo. James Wilder was born February 13, 1857. Laura had a baby girl named Rose, born December 5,1886 in De Smet, South Dakota. On October 23, 1949 Almanzo died. Sadly, Laura died on February 10, 1957 at Rocky Ridge Farm.
Laura was very smart and knew exactly how to take care of herself. Laura was a leader without even trying. She was very strong, brave, and believed in herself. When Laura’s home burnt down she was brave. She had to believe that everything would be okay. In the year 1888, she got diphtheria but she stayed strong and kept working hard.
Laura Ingalls Wilder made it through droughts, blizzards, hailstorms, and debt. They moved all over to try to get a better life. In August 1889, she had a baby boy. He died unnamed. When Laura’s home burnt down it was the experience of a lifetime because it taught Laura that you have to be strong and move on through the tough times. Diphtheria was an experience that taught Laura she must keep going and be brave so that she could still take care of Rose.
Wilder was active in the local Red Cross to help families. She helped Mary get a teacher examination; she got in. After awhile Laura became a teacher too and taught many children. She wrote many books that will inspire adults and children from generation to generation. Laura took in boarders that were struggling, even when she was struggling herself
Many of Laura’s stories changed many people’s lives. Laura had been through a lot and still had to fight for what she wanted or needed. When her little boy died they were struggling and by him dying it made it even worse. Almanzo and Laura tried to help the people that were in need. Almanzo, Laura, and Rose had a hard life but they were thankful for every day and made the best of each day.
