The reason that I chose Larry Bird, as a hero to me, was because he was talked about so much as I was growing up. My brother and dad would always talk about him and how great of a player he was. Even though he was a retired star I would always hear about how good it would be, for our favorite team the Celtics, if he were still young enough to play. Since I was young and couldn't make decisions on my own I got under the impression that Mr. Bird was the best.
Larry Bird grew up in the great state of Indiana. The high school that he attended was the Springs Valley High School in French Lick, Indiana. The highlights of his high school career were that he averaged 30 points and 17 rebounds per game. His best high school game that he ever played was when he scored 54 points and pulled down 38 rebounds. In his college years he played 3 years on the varsity basketball team at Indiana State. In his senior year he was awarded the Sporting News College player of the year as he led his team to the NCAA.
So back to why I think he is a hero to me. At a basketball camp I went to in Casco, one day it was a raining so some people watched a movie about him. It impressed me how he managed to be such a good shooter and such a good player, especially at defense. As I watched I could tell that he has been a hard worker at achieving what he has become. Another thing about him that I feel is very inspiring to me is that he was very intense during his games.
Larry was just an ordinary kid growing up who loved the game just like me. Since I play other sports as well, I do not practice as much as he did. But the point I am trying to make is that he and I both have a passion for this sport, and that if I love the game as much as he did, then I might just become a great basketball player like he once was.
My definition of a hero is one that puts himself out there in life and accomplishes great acheivements. That is my view on Larry Bird. He went out every night and played against bigger guys than him, and had the time of his life entertaining millions across the world.
