by Steven from Spokane

For me it remains an open question whether [this work] pertains to the realm of mathematics or to that of art.

M. C. Escher was a graphic artist who is world famous and whose works have incorporated a substantial mathematical content. One of his most famous traits is his ability to create so-called impossible structures. They would be impossible to build in real life but they look real in his drawings. He was born in Leeuwarden, Holland in 1898 and was the son of a civil engineer. After failing his high school exams his father enrolled him in a School for Architecture. After only a few weeks he told his dad he would rather study graphic arts and so he did. He created unique and fascinating works of art that explore and exhibit a wide range of mathematical ideas.

According to a web page called Tesselation.org Escher can be regarded as the 'Father' of modern tessellations. “Regular divisions of the plane, called “tessellations” are arrangements of closed shapes that completely cover the plane without overlapping and without leaving gaps.” Escher had a great eye for creating tessellations and created many famous works of art involving tessellation.

Escher has always been one of my favorite artists because I love the black and white artwork he has created over his lifetime. He is a hero to me because I am inspired by his drawings and I would love to be able to draw like he did. He has had a very positive influence on the graphic design industry. I also wish I could be as good at creating tessellations as he was; he had a unique ability to create complex shapes with no overlapping or leaving any gaps in his drawings.
