Mohandas Gandhi |
“My life is my message” Gandhi once said. Gandhi said this when he was at the brink of death. Gandhi was the person who saved India from Britain’s wrath. He was a hero. To find out more, read on.
Mohandas Karanchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He was born in a poor family. He also had a normal childhood. He had two brothers. Everybody was a vegetarian in his family; he never drank milk either. Since he hardly ever had any protein he was very weak. He received an English diploma. Eventually his brothers had enough money to send him to college. And that was the end of his childhood.
Mohandas Gandhi was a man with many accomplishments. To start off with, he became a successful lawyer even during the British Empire. He later led marches for Indian independence from Britain; a famous one was the Salt March. And the most important accomplishment was the creation of non-violence while striving for equal rights. He developed it after getting thrown off a train by a British passenger in South Africa. After his death on January 1948 he was named Mahatma (great soul in peasants garb) due to his nobleness and bravery.
Gandhi had numerous challenges during his lifetime. The major challenge he experienced during India’s fight for freedom is that he wanted to fight the British using non-violence. The other problem was that nobody believed that if they used non-violence they would win their independence from Britain. Even though Gandhi had many problems he managed to free India from Britain’s rule.
Gandhi never obtained any awards while he was alive, but he was nominated posthumously for the Nobel Peace Prize. He basically persuaded Indians to fight against Britain non-violently. Today Gandhi is remembered as the father of our nation, well not really our nation but India’s father. Most of what Gandhi did was because of his belief in non-violence. Although Gandhi never got an award, he was nominated for a really hard-to-get nomination.
Gandhi was very brave; even though he was brave he wasn’t strong. When the British heard of his bravery they also thought he was strong and sent many mercenaries to stop his demonstration. Gandhi was also determined. Gandhi was mostly determined to defeat the British without actually hurting anyone. And his biggest and most important trait is honesty. If Gandhi were not honest, he would not be the father of India.
There are many lessons we can learn from Gandhi.
