Miep Gies |
Miep Gies is my hero because she was a very strong person she went through starvation twice in her life. First in world war one and then again in world war two. She is also very courageous with hiding eight Jewish people and keeping them hidden for a year or so. She also keep them well fed. She is inspirational because she made me realize that anybody can stand up for what they believe in.
She was born in 1909 in Vienna, Austria. She went through two world wars and was dying of starvation when she was put into foster care at the age of five. She was later adopted still was staying in contact with her biological family. When she was sent away from her family she was really sick and there was not enough food for her grandma, her sister and her mom and dad so she was the one to be sent away.

Miep Gies reading Anne's book |
In 1933 she started working for Mr. Frank as a jam maker. She sent money to her birth family. She later met Anne Frank and found out they had a lot in common. She and Henk, Miep’s husband, would go over to the Frank's house every Saturday for tea. Anne would talk about the movies and the stars in the movies. I think that Meip really enjoyed Anne because they would talk and like the same things.
The Franks had to go into hiding. A few months later the Van Daans started to live with the Franks. Within a year or so Dr. Albert Dussel also lived in the hiding place. Miep would take and give letters from Dr. Dussel and his wife. Every morning she would sneak up to the hiding place and get a shopping list from the families. As food became scarce she would have to go to many different shops, unlike in America when you could go to one or maybe two at the most.
As you can see Meip Gies is a true hero because she was able to keep quiet and not tell anybody about the eight people hiding in the hiding place. It was very brave to risk her own life. I would do what she did in a heart beat. It is really amazing.
