Mia Hamm

by Molly from Omaha

When you think of a hero you probably think of Superman or Batman like we all do. Think harder. Who is your hero? My hero is someone who works hard and is dedicated to what she does. She is always positive towards her teammates, and overcame clubfeet. If you haven't guessed I will help you: she is married to Nomar Garciapara.

My hero is Mia Hamm. Mia's real name is Mariel Margaret Hamm. Mia Hamm's mother, Stephanie, was a ballet dancer, and her father was in the military. Mia was born on March 7th, 1972 in Selma, Alabama, but her home town is Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mia was born with two clubfeet and wore casts over them when she was a baby, and she overcame them to end up being one of the best soccer players. Mia Hamm was the fourth of six children. Her brother, Garrett, had bone marrow disease, he died in 1997. After his death she started a foundation supporting this disease called the " Mia Hamm Foundation." Since Mia's father was in the military, she kept on moving,so Mia really learned how to play soccer in France and joined her first team at the age of fourteen in Texas.

Mia Hamm was such a good soccer player that she was being scouted at the age of fourteen, and joined the U.S. National team when she was fifteen. She scored her first goal at the age of seventeen. Mia Hamm was the youngest player of the U.S. team winning the 1991 World Cup. Some other accomplishments of Mia Hamm's have been: winning the ESPY in 1996, being a part of the Olympic Gold Medal team, and receiving the 2002 player of the year award. Mia Hamm played for North Carolina ,and in 2001 she played for Washington Freedom, a professional team.

Mia Hamm was a great soccer player. She scored 149 goals in international soccer. Mia Hamm retired after the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Mia Hamm inspired many people with the way she played soccer.

Do me a favor next time you think of your hero. Go further than Superman of Batman. Think of people who have influenced you in one way or another. My hero inspired me to try soccer and I love it, and she also inspired me to always be positive and to always try my hardest.
