Mary Katherine Campbell was born in Columbus, Ohio. Her birth date was May 9, 1905. Her father’s name was Herman Rhodes Campbell, and her mother’s name was Estelle Edwards. She did not have any brothers or sisters.
Mary was a two time Miss America, and also Miss Columbus at a young age. She was also the first high school graduate to win the pageant because she lied about her age to get in. After she won, she entered Ohio State as an art major. When she finished college, she went home to care for her mother until she died. Mary Katherine Campbell married Frederick Townley.
Mary became “Miss Columbus” over 170 other young women, and then proceeded to Atlantic City. There she won the “Miss America” pageant and held the title two years in a row. She had many accomplishments, but here are a few of her major ones. Mary won Miss Columbus, Miss America 1922, and Miss America 1923. She was also very close to winning Miss America 1924.
During the time that Mary Katherine Campbell was Miss America, there were many things going on. First, the Wrigley building in Chicago was completed. Next, there was the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Finally, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated by President Taft.
Mary Katherine Campbell died June 7, 1990. She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware County, Ohio.
Mary won the title twice, and many said that it was impossible. She inspired many people by doing this. Also, when she could have become a movie star, she went home to take care of her mother. This is why I think Mary Katherine Campbell is a hero. When she was competing, she actually wanted one of the other girls to win. Mary was also asked to be in movies and shows, but her mother refused.
