Miss Chang

by Alexis from Pickerington

"This is beginning for us, ah-Kim and it's all due to you."

First of all, my hero is Kimberly's mom, Miss Chang, in the book, Girl In Translation, because she gave of herself all throughout the book and never asked for anything in return. She was a hardworking woman who pushed her body past it's limits to be able to help pay for her daughter's expenses and pay the bills for a hardly livable apartment. She is humble and kind, and when her sister would treat her wrong she would always forgive her, thank her for helping her and Kimberly out financially and talk highly about her.

I think it is extremely important to have heroes because heroes are people you can look up to and strive to be like. Heroes encourage us to be more than average, to work hard, and make a difference in other's lives.

Miss Chang (Kimberly's mom) humble, kind, and deeply religious. She never takes any credit, she always gives it to her daughter. She is slow to anger, and understanding in hard times, like when Kimberly told her that she was pregnant. She said, "This is the beginning for us, and it's all due to you." Once again she is giving Kim all the credit for their blessings. Kim said, "As soon as I graduate, I'll be free to work much more for us."(263) Miss Chang being selfless and considerate answered, "You just worry about your studies, now that we don't have those debts to Aunt Pala anymore, we'll manage."(263) Miss Chang meant by that that she was willing to work and do whatever it took for her daughter to go to college and have the money she needed. That's a hero.

Kimberly's mother should be inducted into the Hero Hall Of Fame because she's an ordinary person who did heroic things to give her daughter a brighter future. She worked everyday tirelessly so her daughter could have things like clothes, school supplies, and food, despite the fact that she made so little money. She always kept a positive attitude and saved the money she had for her daughter Kimberly. Kimberly's mom lived in a broken down, hardly livable apartment full of roaches and mice, she was also single mom taking care of Kimberly alone with no support from family or friends. The fact that she she still keeps a smile on her face and supports Kimberly the best she possibly can in her bleak situation, makes her a hero.
