Margot Fonteyn

by Madison from Atglen

Margot Fonteyn was born on May 18, 1919 and died on February 21, 1991 from cancer. Margot Fonteyn was born in Reigate, England, under the name of Margot Hookman. Margot did ballet through bad feet and still did it beautifully.

Three major accomplishments are first being in Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle because a lot of people wanted Margot to be in them since she was wonderful. Margot’s second accomplishment was that in 1940 Margot was named principle dancer which is a huge honor. Margot’s third accomplishment was in 1956 because Margot received the honorary title of Dame Commander of the British Empire. Now here are some obstacles Margot overcame. First is that Margot had a bad start trying to make a play because nobody knew her talent yet. Second is that when Margot Fonteyn got married, she had to choose for sometime between commitments as both ballerina and Ambassador's wife.

Three traits that describe Margot Fonteyn is first that Margot was perseverance because she danced through bad feet which wasn’t fun. Margot didn’t care as long as she was dancing. My second trait is determination because Margot wasn’t going to give up until she became prima ballerina and that’s what happened. My last trait is conviction because Margot had a strong thought in becoming principal ballerina and then it happened that she did all of that. Those three traits describe Margot Fonteyn.

Margot is a hero because she danced with bad feet tried to fight cancer and was named prima ballerina. To me that makes her special. I want to follow in her footsteps except for cancer. I have already started and in a couple years I will hopefully reach my goal. Margot’s last dance was in her early 70’s before she retired. Margot lived to be 70 before cancer took her. This is why Margot Fonteyn is a hero to me.
