Martin Luther King Jr

by Tyree from St. Louis

Martin Luther King, Jr also known as M.L.K, Jr is a man of wisdom, courage, and, most of all, honor. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King, both a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist, had a drastic impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s. In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a very strong leader for civil rights for members of his race. King was a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He later directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C. He delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson.

M.L.K showed true courage by standing up for what he thought was right even though he was threatened. He was arrested about twenty times and assaulted at least four times, and he never gave up the fight for the fairness of colored people. M.L.K was a man who wanted change in the world. He wanted the separation between blacks and whites to stop and to let blacks have equal rights as the whites do. He wanted to let people know that they were not any different from them. He was a role model of courage and for that he is my role model. "Let freedom ring from the snow capped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring."

M.L.K was a great hero to all of the people of color. He helped stop segregation. In his speech "I Have a Dream" he said, "I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice... I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together." He showed wisdom and smarts in that speech, and it is one of the most famous speeches delivered by him.

He is my hero because of what he did for the people of his race. He is my hero because of what he did when he was arrested, assaulted and threatened.  He still moved on and today there is little racism or segregation. This is why he is my hero.
