Martin Luther King, Jr.

by Sahvon from Victorville

The greatest hero
The greatest hero

He was born in January 15, 1929. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Also the youngest Nobel Peace prize winner in 1964. He helped find the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957. On the March of Washington he read the "I have a dream" speech. Let's face it, Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest peacemakers ever.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference was a group created for non-violent protests which Martin Luther King led until his death. Once a deranged black woman called Izola Curry stabbed King with a letter opener. In the Albany movement was a coalition formed at Albany that King and the SCLC became involved.

In 1968 King and the SCLC organized the "poor People Campaign." The campaign was in the march on Washington. It demanded economic aid for poor communities in the US. King assembled "a multiracial army of poor people" to march on Washington. At first the campaign wasn't supported.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. "He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986."
