Martin Luther King Jr.

by Ashkon from Leawood

Martin Luther King Jr. is a hero because he led the American Civil Rights Movement. He is considered one of the most important people in American history. Also, he is one of the best speakers. Martin Luther King wrote some of the most influential speeches ever. Not to mention, he did all of this in a nonviolent way. Martin Luther King is a true American hero who helped African Americans earn their civil rights.

Martin Luther King was born with the name Michael Luther King Jr., but he later changed it and went by Martin. Martin was born on January 15, 1929. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived with his parents, Martin Luther King Sr., and Alberta Williams King. Later on, he married Coretta Scott King on June 18, 1953. He had four children, Yolanda King, Martin Luther King III, Bernice King, and Dexter Scott King.

He helped lead a very important boycott called the "Montgomery Bus Boycott." It started when another famous woman, Rosa Parks, didn't give her seat to a white man on the bus and she went to jail. Martin joined and helped them win the court battle. One of his most famous and influential speeches was the "I have a dream" speech. He delivered it in front of a crowd of about 250,000 in Washington D.C. It was about how in his dream, everyone was treated equal and peaceful to each other.

Martin faced many challenges as he did all of this. Many people hated him because of his belief. They called him racial slurs. Martin was also arrested several times. Most of the arrests were because of civil disobedience. He overcame all of these challenges to do what he stood for and that was for equality.

Martin Luther King was no ordinary hero. He was a man of great accomplishments in his lifetime. Martin stands out from other heroes because of how dedicated he was and how much he fought for his rights.
