Misty May-Treanor is the best beach volleyball player in the world. Misty won 3 Olympic gold medals and was the first person to win a gold in their sport. Without the motivation and perseverance to win, Misty May could be nobody--but she chose to be somebody. On August 19th of 2004, Misty May-Treanor was awarded with the honor of being crowned with the first Olympic gold medal in the beach volleyball division. "In 2004 Misty May combined with Kerri Walsh to become the first Americans to win Olympic gold in beach volleyball." (Olympic Highlights). Misty May-Treanor is a hero to me because she dedicates all her time and hard work in order to pursue her lifelong dream.
Misty May-Treanor is a hero because she was the first beach volleyball player to win 3 Olympic gold medals over the course of three years. She is also a role model to girls who play any sport, proving that anyone can make it to the Olympics, as long as you work your way up to the top. Misty was born into an active and loving family on July 30th, 1977. "May was born in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Robert "Butch" May, played on the 1968 U.S. Olympic volleyball team. Her late mother, Barbara, played tennis at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); her cousin, Taylor Dent, played Olympic tennis at the 2004 Summer Games. Even babysitter had a sports background: Karch Kiraly, who won three gold medals in Olympic and beach volleyball."(Misty May Gale). May-Treanor grew up in a sports-related background, therefore leaving May to discover her own talent. At the age of eight, May accompanied her father in a match of volleyball, and after her first experience, she fell in love with the sport. After that, we fast-forward fifteen years and we have a senior in college at California State University, playing the sport she loves. Misty May-Treanor is a hero because she is strong in her hardest moments, and converts her emotions into motivation. "In 2002, Misty May-Treanor hit the lowest point in her career. In a career filled with so several highs, there have been very few lows. When she was 24, she was down there. It didn't have so much to do with an injury or a missed opportunity. May-Treanor said her mother's death caused her excruciating pain and challenged her love for volleyball, she revealed in an exclusive interview with the Daily Pilot Thursday afternoon."(Play For). Misty May-Treanor is an inspiration, coming back after a jarring event of her mother's death, Misty chooses to turn her sadness into the power and will to play hard. It would be incredibly difficult to go through her situation, and what is even more astonishing is the strength she came back with. Misty May-Treanor is a hero for tolerating her now emotionally unstable family, and the traumatic event of her mother's death, and ignore them all to compete in the Olympics.
Misty May is very competitive and hardworking, which sets as an example for young people to persevere and prepare for the hard road ahead. "May, who also competed in the 2000 Olympiad, holds the women's professional beach volleyball record for most tournament wins and became the first woman to win 100 tourneys in the sport."(Olympic Highlights). Being the inspirational woman she is, Misty takes a part in holding the women's beach volleyball record to get the most tournament wins in her career, as well as winning 100 tournaments, this is an inspiration to all young girls that play volleyball which push them harder. Misty May had spent hours upon hours preparing for her tournaments and all has payed off. With all her talent, Misty May just keeps attending professional tournaments to challenge her competitive spirit. "In 2007, May and Walsh became the first team of either gender to win three straight world titles since the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) began hosting the event in 1997. In May of 2007, May earned her 73rd title, breaking McPeak's record. By year's end, she had 89 victories and $1.6 million in earnings. May and Walsh were also named the AVP Tour's team of the year from 2003 through 2007. In 2008, right before the start of the Olympics, May and Walsh won their 17th consecutive tournament and 96th straight match, both records."(Olympic Heights). Misty May shows how her work pays off, with all her wins and records set, she is someone who recognizes her talent and uses it to her full capacity to continue her streak and get better as a player, which is what I admire and what I wish to achieve. With the dream to attain a well known reputation in volleyball, Misty sure captures it.
Misty May-Treanor is a hero. She is heroic because of her hard work, competitive spirit, and positive outlook on life. Misty shows people that if you want something--go get it. Misty had a focused eye on her future from a young age. Misty shows that even the smallest piece of a dream can sculpt a successful future.
