Marilyn Monroe

by Calista from San Diego

Growing up with no mom or dad, having to switch families every so often, and being abused and sexually assaulted. That is what Marilyn Monroe had to go through for 13 years, until she decided to become something more special. But soon did she know, it would result in a tragic ending for her fans and even her own life. Because Monroe did not have an easy childhood, it led her to do different and better things with her life. Life did not begin easily for the baby girl known as Norma Jeane. Her unwed mother, a film editor, at times went by the name of Gladys Monroe Mortenson or Gladys Pearl Baker. Soon after Norma Jeane's birth in Los Angeles, CA, her mother suffered a mental breakdown and was hospitalized. She spent most of her life in institutions. Marilyn Monroe is a hero because she started out with a scaring childhood but soon found her way into becoming a huge success. Throughout this journey, she was strong, independent, and inspirational.

Marilyn Monroe was a strong young lady because she put her image and career prior to herself. "In 1962, the actress had an overdose of sleeping pills and went into a coma that led to her death. Marilyn Monroe was great and she achieved so many things. People are always telling you to go for your dreams and she did. She acted in 30 amazing movies, she won a 1962 Golden Globe for Female World Film Favorite, and she inspired many people, including someone like me, to go after our dreams.""About Marilyn Monroe." (About Marilyn Monroe. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2013..) Marilyn Monroe was a strong young lady because she put her image and career first before herself. This then led to major depression and soon resulted in suicide. This shows that someone that has so much talent can also get caught under stress and depression. Marilyn Monroe cared too much about her image that she couldn't take it anymore. "The true story of Marilyn Monroe's death may never be known. To her shocked and adoring public, she became an enduring legend. Always ashamed of her sketchy education, Monroe was constantly torn between a need for adoration and acceptance on the screen and a desire for serious learning. That is one of the reasons she was so attracted to those she considered educated and intellectual. Insecure, anxious to please, she both flaunted her status as a sex symbol and tried to rise above it." She tried her very best to stay strong and shake her pain and guilt away but she couldn't do it and her feelings and emotions got the best of her. Marilyn Monroe did not have a perfect life. She tried pleasing others even though she was in pain. Therefore, that made her very strong.

Marilyn Monroe was a very independent woman in her life. She never had to depend on anyone, because she learned not to as a child. "Probably the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on Tuesday, June 1st, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital. Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles." (Marilyn Monroe Biography." Bio.com. A&E Networks Television, n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2013.). Marilyn Monroe was independent because she grew up without a father figure. This made her grow up faster than a normal child. This shows that she had no choice but to mature rapidly as a young girl. Because Marilyn Monroe had a stressful young life, it resulted in an even harder adult life. "During her all-too-brief life, Marilyn Monroe overcame a difficult childhood to become of the world's biggest and most enduring sex symbols. She never knew her father, and once thought Clark Gable to be her father". This shows that Monroe had no choice but to mature early and never depend on anyone but herself. As a result, she turned into an independent young lady. Even though Marilyn Monroe was a "sex symbol" she was also a responsible woman who never needed a man or anyone to take care of her.

Marilyn Monroe was an inspirational lady. She taught young girls to never give up even through their darkest times. "Monroe had a horrible childhood that was characterized by neglect. She went through a series of foster homes, she was sexully abused and and her childhood was just very sad. Her mother had to work overtime, so Marilyn went into the care of Albert and Ida Bolender, who were Christian Scientists. She lived with them for about 7 years, seeing her mother on occasional weekends." This shows that Monroe had to teach herself how to be on her own and still be fine. After growing up without her real parents, she became something special to show girls it is okay to be alone and be yourself. After having a lonely childhood, Marilyn decided to do something bigger and better with her life. So she decided to start her acting career. "Los Angeles, California. During her all-too-brief life, Marilyn Monroe overcame a difficult childhood to become of the world's biggest and most enduring sex symbols. During her career, Monroe's films grossed more than $200 million. Monroe died of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962, at only 36 years old." She got so caught up in her image that she totally blocked out reality. So one day it hit her and she didn't know how to handle the pain and confusion. Being a famous, beautiful young woman isn't always great. Marilyn Monroe is an inspiration to many people all over the world. Even though she may not be alive anymore she taught a very important lesson.

At 7 years old, Monroe returned to a life in foster homes, where she was on several occasions sexually assaulted; she later said that she had been raped when she was 11 years old. But she had one way out of marriage. She wed her boyfriend Jimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942, at the age of 16. Monroe decided to take her life down a different path that led her the wrong direction, into depression and suicide. She inspires me and girls every age to never depend on someone and to make your life better than it could ever be. Do what you want to do, and become what you want to become. Don't ever let someone stop you.
