Marilyn Monroe

by Irene from San Diego

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring." Marilyn Monroe spoke of how she didn't strive for perfection and never messing up was okay. She viewed herself as only human, and never viewed herself as above anyone. It shows how people, even famous people like Marilyn Monroe, had flaws. Around 1942, at the age of 15, Monroe dropped out of high school, and then started working in a munitions factory in Burbank California, which happened to be the place she was discovered! Her career started to take off when she became a model, and she had "...her hair lightened and her name changed to Marilyn Monroe..." (Great Lives from History: The Twentieth Century).  With the fact Monroe had to face with all her insecurities, and abandonment problems, she didn't let those overshadow her and her love of acting or let them weaken her, but only to make her strong. Marilyn Monroe lived her dream of being an unforgettable actress/ performer, but behind all the glamour, there was an insecure and lonely Monroe. She didn't let her problems/ troubles push her down, weaken her, but pushed it all aside to become a successful actress and legend......which she accomplished.

Because Monroe was always indifferent; she wanted her acting to be more than just witty comedy, but also to make herself feel better about herself. Monroe didn't want to live this life just for the money, but it was to make her feel wonderful. "Today, she is still considered the world's most popular icon of sex appeal and beauty, and is remembered for her idiosyncratic sense of humor and sly wit" (1996-2013 A+E Television Networks, LLC. All Rights Reserved).  Not only is Monroe's look; blonde bombshell with excessive style; unforgettable as is, but also the way she acted, how naturally it came to her, and what the whole reason is of why she dreamt of being an actress...to feel wonderful! When Monroe would act, she believed that acting wasn't something you do, it's something you feel inside you, that you have a purpose in doing it. Not many people really realized what Monroe was going through, throughout her entire life, but acting made those thoughts and feelings go away. "With her breathy voice and hourglass figure, Monroe became a much-admired international star, despite her chronic insecurities regarding her acting abilities." (1996-2013 A+E Television Networks, LLC. All Rights Reserved.). Sure, Monroe at the time was known as the perfect, famous, blonde bombshell everyone admired, but that's only half of what Monroe really was. She wasn't perfect, and she had insecurities and problems like any other normal person. The acting took her mind away from all those problems from her past that has haunted her during her whole life. It made her feel better, it gave her the reason to smile and push aside hose problems. Acting to her was not about the money, it was to make her feel happy, wonderful. To Monroe, she acted for a purpose; it wasn't just to become famous, but to inspire people, especially those with problems similar to hers.

Marilyn Monroe was known as the bubbly and perky actress that everyone thought she didn't have a care in the world, but behind the scenes, Monroe was really a lonely young woman who felt abandoned and unloved.   Monroe was morally strong, and she tried her hardest to push her problems aside, away from her acting. Although, as a young girl, Monroe felt neglected and insecure, she would always think of her biggest dream she wished she could accomplish; being a Hollywood star.  "Monroe's own coming of age was apparently fraught with pain. Born illegitimate to a mentally infirm mother in Los Angeles, Monroe was shuffled among a dozen foster homes and an orphanage until she married at age sixteen... In 1946 Monroe realized her childhood dream of becoming a movie actress when the Twentieth Century-Fox studio signed her to a one-year contract." ("Norma Jean Baker." Contemporary Authors Online).  Monroe did indeed have so many problems to face, but she didn't let those problems get in the way of her performance, and she did that by always keeping her head up and smiling through all her tough times and just looked past it all. Her problems as a child made her independent, which led her to her stardom. She believed that being imperfection is beauty, and always wanted to be unpredictable, and NOT a cliché, by playing bubbly, dumb blonde roles in her movies. As Monroe continued in her young acting days, she still had those feelings of neglect and insecurity, and still had the feeling of being misunderstood linger throughout her, but she started realizing not everything is about being perfect.  "So keep your head high, your chin high, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing, and there's so much to smile about." (Marilyn Monroe).  She believed every person, especially girls, were beautiful in their own special way, which inspires girls to not be so insecure of themselves, as Monroe felt about herself her whole life.  She always thought of the positives, and didn't want to think about things that would bring her down; her insecurities, her abandonment problems, her past that haunts her. Instead, she would look life in a positive perspective, making her realize no one, not even if they tried, could ever be perfect. Monroe has always had loneliness haunt her throughout her life, from beginning to end. She never wanted the thoughts of her past overshadow her acting, and make her seem weak. She was strong enough to make it seem like she wasn't even trying when she act, that it would just come naturally, but behind all that glitter, was a scared and insecure Marilyn, who shoved all those feelings aside to bring out the bold and glamorous Monroe everyone knew.

Despite all Monroe has gone through in her life, she succeeded to living her biggest dream to become a famous actress. Not only did she become famous, but she has become a legend that no one in the Hollywood world will ever forget. "Monroe made her now-famous performance at John F. Kennedy's birthday celebration, singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President.""...."A half century later, the world is still fascinated by her beauty and talent." (1996-2013 A+E Television Networks, LLC. All Rights Reserved.). Ever since she was a little girl, Monroe has had the dream of becoming an iconic actress, which that dream has become a reality.  It was lucky that Monroe got to live her childhood dream, and she believed it happened for a reason. She had a special talent that was recognized almost immediately, and this one special talent sure was lucky it was found. If she had never gone on her own at the age of 15, her raw talent and gift would have never been discovered. "Decades after her death in 1962, movie actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe remains an icon of American popular culture". Monroe has accomplished so many things in her acting life, from making her own production company, to singing to the president on his birthday. No one in the Hollywood world could ever forget her, because of how iconic and legendary she has become through her acting days. Even though Monroe died, her spirit still lives on to this day. Marilyn Monroe was a strong young woman who, as a young child, always dreamed of being the actress she became! She always had the thoughts of being lonely and un-loved running through her head, but managed to live the life of a successful actress, and have her spirit live on till this day, and is forever remembered.

With all of the problems she had to face with, Marilyn Monroe managed to live her dream of becoming a legendary and iconic actress no one would soon forget. Ever since Monroe was a young girl, she had always dreamt of being an actress, which indeed, came true. Being the famous and actress, no one really realized how Monroe really felt inside: misunderstood and insecure.   She never wanted to be the same, or be perfect, which she believed was boring. She made people, especially girls including myself, realize that you don't have to be perfect for people to love you and respect you. She believed everything had a purpose to it and that everything happened for a reason. "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so you can learn to let go. Things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they're right. You believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself. And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." Marilyn Monroe is a hero because she didn't focus on all the bad things that could have pulled her down. But instead, she pushed them out of the way when it came to the thing she loved and enjoyed most in her life: acting. She never wanted to be perfect, because what she was was who she was and who she was meant to be.
