Michael Oher

by Jade from Great Falls

Some people are born to this world with a life filled with indescribable wealth and love from their family. Others not so much. They are born to a family with great poverty, and then worse, having your mother lawfully removed from being your full-time guardian. This is what happened to Michael Oher, my hero. Michael is a selfless, resilient and a brave man. He puts other people before him, and is always strong. Here are a few reasons why Michael Oher is my hero.

One of the reasons why Michael is my hero is because he is very brave. He lived in an area in the south side of town called Hurt Village. It was a very drug-filled environment with lots of violence. His mother was one who got caught up in drugs, and had gotten lawfully removed from Michael's environment. She went to rehab and got some help, but Michael remained homeless with little food, two shirts, a pair of shorts, and a pair of Jordans. He went to Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee, filled with rich kids, where he always got made fun of. But he didn't care, he just went on his way trying to do school work. He also was a big kid and a different ethnicity, where he got made fun of for his size and the color of his skin, but again, he went in his way focusing on his life ahead. He never focused on the bad world around him, but on the friends and close family that loved him whenever he needed them to.

Another reason why Michael is my hero is because he is very selfless. He always put other people's safety before his own. Leigh Anne Tuohy, his adopted mother, wanted to get new clothes for him when he was staying with her family for a while. They went back to Hurt Village, where all his clothes were at his mother's home, to get the clothes that actually fit him. There was a gang waiting for them when they got there. Leigh Anne was scared but refused to let Michael go alone. He said to stay in the car and that he had her back if she got hurt. This shows that he would rather get killed than to let anyone he loves get hurt. He is an overall good person and a safe one to be around. Also when he was little, and when he was put in several different orphanages, he would always sneak out at different times when everyone else was in bed and go to see if his mama was ok. The State gave him a name " the runner" because he would always run away to where the person he loved was hurt and he tried to help them in some way.

The last reason why Michael is my hero is because he is very resilient. He has a bounce-back attitude. Michael started his football career at Briarcrest Christian School in a spring football program. He didn't know much at first but with the help from his little brother S.J he soon began to play the part and looked the part of a football player. His team appreciated him from the start. During a home game, there was a rude jock from Munford that thought he was better than everybody else. He made fun of the team and always was putting bad attitude toward the players (especially Michael, again for his size and color). But when it went too far, Michael toughened up and became the star player not the stuck-up guy. He got tackles and helped the team get touchdowns. He was then the star player. And during one of the most important plays of his career, S.J caught it on camera, and sent it to some of the best football colleges in the United States. If he did not toughen up and focus, he might not have gone to Ole' Miss and started his career.

As you can see, Michael Oher is my hero. He always wanted to help people and was always a star on the field and a progressive student in the classroom. Michael put people before himself, he was resilient, and he was brave, in life and on the football turf. Michael Oher will always and forever be my hero. Michael is currently a football player for the Carolina Panthers at age 29.
