In my mind, a hero is born, not made. A hero helps people in their community that are ill and suffering. A hero is someone like Marie Polycarpe. Her family immigrated to America from Haiti. She went to a fashion school and got a degree in fashion. She travels to Haiti for months at a time to help the people suffering from the earthquake a few years back.
People opened an orphanage called Bethlehem Home / Kay Betleem for the homeless children. Bethlehem Home is located in a town called Jeremie. They saved a little girl named Jessica. Jessica had worms in her stomach and her parents were dead. She was almost dying, but thanks to the orphanage, she is now alive and happy as ever. Children like Jessica are in desperate need of a hero, someone to be there for them and to love them. This is exactly what Marie does. She helps these children live a better life.
Marie said to me, "Be glad for what you have, because other people have it much worse than you." She knows two very different worlds. One where there is poverty everywhere and people are dying every second. Another where people actually have a roof over their heads constantly and food in their stomachs.
Marie reminded me of how good of a life I really have and that other children are suffering a lot worse than I am. She knows this because she saw what it is like in Haiti compared to our lives in America. She saw the heartbreaking need to be loved, and she answered her call to help the children in Haiti. This is why I call her a hero - because she loves and cares for many children who don't have a home, and she gives them a home in their hearts.
