Martha Proppe is my grandmother or Oma. She was born in Germany. She grew up in Germany, Poland and then immigrated to Canada when she was 18 years old in 1952. Her parents were Melitta Janke and Henry Janke, they were farmers. My Oma had 1 sister named Hildegard Renz and 2 brothers named Edward Janke and Dan Janke. The subjects she liked In school were writing, reading, and art. Some special events growing up were she lived through World War Two and she immigrated to Canada. She wanted to live a free life and have a home and have peace.

My hero's life was remarkable in many ways, she lived through World War Two and has many survival stories when she was a young girl. She saw a lot of bad and scary things. She was very poor and often had not enough food to eat. My hero was admirable for her bravery and her helpfulness during those difficult times. The qualities my hero has are: #1 Hard working - my hero was extremely hard working, she had over 10 different jobs and 3 different businesses she started on her own. #2 Artistic- hero is very talented she paints beautiful painting, she does folk art, she knits, she gardens, she sings and she plays the accordion and harmonica also, she is a very good baker and cook. #3 Author- my hero is writing a book about her life. #4 Brave- my hero is brave for surviving the war and hard times and brave for trying so many different things in life. #5 Caring- my hero is caring. She is always helping our family or thinking about us.#6 Smart- my hero was never able to finish school but she is very smart because she is always teaching us. #7 Giving- my hero is always giving to others, she is always helping at church and her home is open to everyone. I think my hero's qualities were shaped by hardships she experienced as a young girl during the war. She appreciates the little things in life. My hero says yes, she has made mistakes or bad decisions before, but she said everyone does and this is how we learn in life. Some important lessons anyone can learn from my hero is to never give up, always try your best, be nice and caring to other people. My hero has no enemies, everyone likes her. I think my hero has been a good mentor to all people by the way she lives her life. My hero goes to church every Sunday and reads the Bible. She teaches me good morals.

A hero to me is someone who you look up to and someone who has special talents or experiences, also, someone that has a good qualities. To me my grandmother is a hero. A hero is different from someone who is just well known, because someone who is well known may not be a good person. My hero talks about her "brother and mother" as her heroes "they were very brave and helpful during the war". My hero lives in Springbank, Calgary, alive and well. She has many relatives still alive in Canada and Europe. My hero won ribbons for her beautiful paintings and she is writing a book about her life. I choose my grandmother for my hero because I admire what she had to go though in the war and she has all the qualities I admire in a person. I learned from my hero to be a good person, work hard and try your best.

Some extra information about my hero are her hobbies. Some of her hobbies are:
-Gardening
-Travelling
-Painting
-Kniting
-Writing
-Singing
