Mike Sewell

by Xavier from Pickerington

"The greatest thing you can give someone is time." -Mike Sewell

Hero: a person or animal that took time out of their life to make a positive difference in another's life and still affects this person today. A hero doesn't have to have a cape, they don't have to be a superstar, and they don't have to be strong, but they most definitely can be someone in your community. Anyone can be a hero even you, but like all fictional heroes, all heroes have a weakness.

It is important to have a hero. For many a hero would do a great deal for their life. A hero can inspire someone to be more than what they are. A hero can help lead an example for those who don't have one. Those who wind up in jail or die a horrible end up that way because they choose the wrong person to be their hero. That is not a hero. That is another disaster waiting to happen.

To everyone who has met or will ever meet Mike Sewell, they would see an average man with grey hair, glasses, a band director, and a man with a good sense of humor. The real Mike Sewell is all of those things and more. Mike Sewell (aka Mr. Sewell or Father Sewell) is a man who has the power to unite slightly more than 200 people together to make beautiful music and one giant family. He had introduced me to band in the fifth grade, but little did I know that band would become a great part of my life.

I joined the band in the seventh grade as a trumpet player. Mr. Sewell had opened my ears to so many varieties of music. In the eighth grade he introduced the class to jazz, one of the many self expressing genres of music. Each year I grew closer and closer to music. Without band, Mr. Sewell and music I would be in a world of pain. My grades got better and so did my social and mental life.

There are many reasons why Mr. Sewell should be inducted into the hall of fame. He made life for a lot of Pickerington Central students brighter. His teachings from previous bands to the ones now had allowed us to get to two famous places and parades in the US. Through the toughest time he still moves forward. He seriously lives and dies for the band. All the surgeries and pain he still shows up to band almost everyday of the school year and he makes great decisions for the band. He is loved by everyone in this huge family.
