Mother Teresa

by Elizabeth from San Diego

In her own eyes she was "God's pencil-a tiny bit of pencil with which he writes what he likes (Guntzelman)." She spoke volumes about what she was passionate about. During her early years, she was fascinated with stories of missionary life and service. She could locate any number of missions on the map, and tell others of the service being given in each place. She showed an interest at an early age to be a helping hand. This later turned into a collection of missionaries in her name and honor. A hero in my book has to possess many morally important values. Calling somebody your hero is important in today's society because it is hard to find, but Mother Teresa would be an example to all, on how to life your life. Having a relationship with God will get you further than you can imagine and that's one of the many reasons Mother Teresa had the courage to bring light into a world of darkness and poverty. Humanitarianism is a leading example of a hero because they have the strength to help others in their time of need . Above all being selfless is an extraordinary example of being a hero. Putting others before you is admirable especially at the level Mother Teresa did. Mother Teresa possesses merciful, humanitarian and selfless traits that make her a hero in my world and many all over the world.

Mother Teresa's selfless nature is a true illustration of a modern day hero. Her hard work and dedication between each of her many jobs to serve God is admirable. Mother Teresa's lifelong journey with God allowed her to live one merciful life. With the strength given, it allowed her to develop a greater love for helping. "Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile. In the slums we are the light of God's kindness to the poor ("Teresa, Mother" Gale)." Mother Teresa was born in God's image and played the role well. Everyone she meet saw the light of God shine within her and that was one of the main reasons she was a well renowned role model for charity. Another amazing door opened for Mother Teresa, this showed her that a lot of work needed to be done in the world. In 1946 Sister Teresa experienced her "call within a call," which she considered divine inspiration to devote herself to caring for the sick and poor ("Mother Teresa,"EBSCO's)." This was Gods way of telling Mother Teresa that theirs more she has to do to build strong missionaries and clinics. Her mission in life was to create strong bonds with everyone that she's touched through her words and actions. The word spoken from God to Mother Teresa gave her the strength to accomplish more than she was destined to do.

Mother Teresa's mission to follow God's call led her to be called a humanitarian for people all across the globe. Her passionate nature makes a great example for anyone to start a clinic for those who need it most. "In 1995, approximately 3 million people suffered from leprosy in India. Mother Teresa began operating her first clinic in 1957, in order to minister to the lepers, who many refused to treat (50 Tilton)." Mother Teresa's mother like instinct saved many lives who had no hope. This had become a main focus of hers, to travel and find the poorest of the poor. Her dedication to this made her the Head of Missionaries of Charity. Her compassionate nature shines through all of her humanitarian work, being a mother figure for those who need it most. She knew there was a lot to be done but her dedication and strength were the reasons she was able to travel to a village outside of India and do what she could. "To prepare to work with the poor, Mother Teresa took an intensive medical training with the American Medical Missionary Sisters in Patna, India("Mother Teresa Biography")". She received numerous distinctions for her service to the poor of Calcutta, India, and the missionary order she founded conducts a wide variety of relief. Mother Teresa worked tirelessly for the sick, dying and anyone in need all over the world. But her medical training wouldn't prepare her for the work needed to be done. Her knack for caring for those who needed compassion love and support the most never went unseen in the world.

Mother Teresa's selfless service to humanity was noticed throughout the world and was know as an icon for charity.Aside from the endless gratitude she received from honored individuals, her first priority was the poorest of the poor and her work to serve God. Mother Teresa never intended to become a celebrity from her work to serve God, but instead she used it to spread good throughout. "Mother Teresa's lifelong dedication to serving the poorest of the poor earned her the Nobel Peace Prize and the admiration of millions of people around the word (10 Tilton)."Her endless dedication to serving those in need also had its downside. She sacrificed being with her family, marriage and starting her own family. But over the years she developed a worldwide relationship with all shes helped. Mother Teresa never let anything get in the way of her work to please God and help "Despite her deteriorating health, she continued to visit missions and speak to audiences all over the world ( 98 Tilton)."Her health was no road block for Mother Teresa. The condition she was in wouldn't allow her to be out of bed but her selflessness gave her the will to power through and be a helping hand.

Her selfless, humanitarian and merciful nature shines through her every move. Her relatability allows people all over the world to connect and feel worthy of treatment or help. "Mother Teresa and her sisters succeeded in crossing the barriers of religion and social class by providing assistance to anyone in need, regardless of their race, faith, or walk of life (69 Tilton)." Mother Teresa's admirable ability to put that behind and focus on the real underlying problem makes her a hero in anybody's book. And these are the many reasons why Mother Teresa is my hero.
