"By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, I am Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic Nun." This quote was said by Mother Teresa, a nun who helped the needy in India. Mother Teresa is considered a hero because she is compassionate and selfless while caring for those who need help. Mother Teresa is known for helping those suffering from poverty. Right from the age of 12, she wanted to become a missionary to spread the love of Christ. She received a "call within a call" which led her to become a nun and to help in the slums of Calcutta. After seeing the poverty in India from her school window, she asked and gained permission to devote her life to helping the needy in India. She established a hospice, centers for the blind, aged, and disabled. She also established a leper colony. Another reason she is so compassionate is because after her father died, she became really close to her mom who instilled a deep commitment to charity in her.

Mother Teresa is considered a hero because she is compassionate and selfless. In 1922, when Mother Teresa was 12, she saw poverty outside her school, and soon she dedicated herself to being a nun. The article about Mother Teresa from "The Famous People" states that," [Mother Teresa] served the unwanted, unloved, and uncared for people of the world"("The Famous People" 2015). This evidence shows that Mother Teresa was compassionate since she cared for those who had no one to care for themselves. Another heroic characteristic of Mother Teresa is her selflessness. The website, EWTN, says that, "In receiving this award [Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize] Mother Teresa. asked that the funds, $6,000 be donated to the poor in Calcutta. This money would permit her to feed hundreds for a year"("EWTN"). This evidence proves that Mother Teresa was selfless because she gave money to the needy rather than keeping it for herself in order to help those that were facing many hardships. In light of this evidence, Mother Teresa is a heroic role model to many because she was compassionate and selfless. She served those in need and gave to those facing hardships.

After her death on September 5, 1977, in Calcutta, India, her legacy still continues. She is remembered for starting many charities. One of the most important charities she started is the Missionaries of Charity. Its purpose was to love and care for those who weren't. This charity became international by the decree of Pope Paul VII. She is also one of the pioneers of establishing homes for AIDS victims. People say that her zeal and works of mercy knew no boundaries. With these actions, the process to declare her a saint begun within 2 years of her death. In light of this evidence, Mother Teresa is considered a hero to many. She was compassionate and selfless while helping those living in the slums. Her legacy still lives on to this day with her many charity organizations which help those who can't care for themselves.
