Malala Yousafzai

by Megan and Emma from Cincinnati

Malala Yousafzai is a hero because she stayed strong even when she was silenced and she stood up for the rights of herself and all girls. When she was only 14 she was shot while she was on her way home from school by the Taliban. When she recovered she continued to speak up for the rights of education for girls. Malala was a strong individual that did not let anyone stop her from what she was set out to do.

Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. She is the daughter of Ziauddin and Tor Pekai Yousafzai and she has two younger brothers. In 2009, the Taliban took over Swat Valley, Pakistan where Malala and her family lived. Soon after they banned girls from going to school. Malala was determined to go to school and with a firm belief in her right to an education, Malala stood up to the Taliban. "I raise up my voice-not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back" (Malala Yousafzai Quotes). She was a hero because she stood up for herself and all the other girls. When the Taliban banned girls from getting an education Malala refused and continued to seek an education and speak up on behalf of all the other girls that wanted to get an education. She showed extreme bravery and courage by standing up to people who had the ability to hurt or even kill her. One day the Taliban discovered who Malala was and attempted to silence her once and for all.

On October 9, 2012 Malala was riding a bus home with her schoolmates when a suspicious man boarded the bus. This man was a masked gunman and demanded to know which girl was Malala. Sadly Malala's location was given away, and within seconds the gunman fired away! Though she still needed many surgeries, she had suffered no major brain damage. She was determined to recover and keep fighting for what she was set out to do. "Today on my first day as an adult, on behalf of the world's children, I demand of leaders we must invest in books instead of bullets."(Kettler, Sara. "Malala Yousafzai.") In March 2013, she was able to begin attending school in Birmingham. Malala showed her bravery and how strong she was with a gun pointed right at her! Malala was a courageous human being that stood up for her peers and herself, and never let obstacles stop her!

Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. (http://www.dawn.com/news/1149955 ())

A hero to us is someone who puts themselves before others and would make sacrifices for others. They are someone who is strong and would stand up for themselves and others too. They are someone to look up to. Malala showed signs of great bravery, courage, and strength by facing the Taliban and being so determined to recover from her almost fatal injury to show that girls can never be silenced.
