Mia Hamm is my hero because she is a famous soccer player who also finds time to support her fans and other children. She is known as the world’s greatest soccer star. She was also in the Olympics and in the World Cup 3 times. Mia’s favorite position is forward which my favorite position was when I played soccer.
Mia Hamm is now 37 years old. But 37 years ago a world famous soccer player was born on March 17, 1972. When Mia was born her real name was Mariel Margaret Hamm. Everyone called her Mia though. She was born in Selma, Alabama but then she moved to Wichita Falls, Texas because that was where her dad was stationed because he was in the army. That was when Mia was 5 years old and that is where Mia started to play soccer. Before that she would just kick the ball around with her brother Garrett in the backyard. Today she is known as a world famous soccer player.
During Mia Hamm’s life there was one major obstacle. The obstacle was to overcome her brother’s death. Her brother Garrett died of apalastic anemia. Garrett always told her to never give up and always persevere in life. Garrett was the one who was always there for Mia and Mia always looked up to him. Mia was so upset that she set up an organization called the Mia Hamm Foundation which supports children with bone marrow disease. But she also had her teammates right by her side to overcome her brother’s death. Mia Hamm’s biggest obstacle in life was definitely to overcome her brother’s death but that didn’t stop her from trying harder and persevering every day.
Throughout Mia Hamm’s life she has made many achievements. One achievement is that she joined the United States National Soccer Team in 1987. She was so proud of herself to make it to the big top. She finally realized that 10 years of playing soccer paid off to becoming a star. The United States soccer team also went to the World Cup championships three times because of Mia leading the way. Another achievement was that she started the Mia Hamm Foundation. This benefits people who suffer with bone marrow disease. She got the idea when her brother, Garrett sadly died of apalastic anemia which is when there is a failure of the bone marrow caused by neoplasm or toxic exposure. Today the foundation still runs and collects money to benefit people with bone marrow disease. Mia Hamm has made so many accomplishments and achievements during her life.
