Mary-Kathern MacKinnon

by Kristen Martha-Lynn MacKinnon

Mary-Kathern was born in Benacadie, Nova Scotia. When she was three years old, she was given away to cousins who lived in Northside, East Bay, so she could live a better life. Some of her interests included baking, sewing, C.W.L., bingo and farming.

One reason why I admire Mary-Kathern is because she had great courage. She had courage in battling cancer four times. She beat it three times but lost the forth. She also had courage because she took over the farm, even thought it was a "man's job." Finaly, when she was younger, she was removed from her family. She had the courage to excel despite her tough circumstances.

Another reason why I admire Mary-Kathern is for her selflessness. She always did without to give to others who needed it more. Even though she was so sick, five days before she died, she had the whole family over on Easter Sunday for the old traditional Easter we always had. Lastly, after her stepsister died, she left behind her own house and moved in with her stepbrother to look after him and the farm.

The last reason why I admire Mary-Kathern is because she is strong willed. Even when she was going through chemotheropy, she wouldn't let anyone do anything for her. She still wanted to do things for herself. She also went to work in the late 40's early 50's when most other women stayed home to look after the children. She did this because her family needed the money. Also, she made the life of her family better than her life when she was a child no matter what sacrifice she had to make.

In conlusion, Mary-Kathern was a very brave and selfless person. She was an inspiration for my whole familly because of her gracious and generous spirit. Her attempts to help other people when, really, they should have been helping her was proof of this.
