Bob Marley

by Ryan from Hamden

A hero is someone worth believing in. They give people hope and save lives. Even in some of the worst places in the world people need something to believe in. That’s why my hero is Bob Marley. He gave Jamaican kids from the gutter beautiful music to inspire them that will be forever remembered.

Bob Marley moved to Kingston in the late fifties. He and his mother eventually settled in a shanty town in Kingston called Trenchtown. When Bob was a kid he listened to American radio stations and loved the music. His favorite was a New Orleans station that played the latest tunes by artists like Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Curtis Mayfield and Brook Benton. When he quit school, he and his friend Bunny (Neville O'Riley Livingston) pursued music.

One great thing he accomplished was the survival of an assassination attempt. The government was trying to kill him because of the political tension he was stirring. But as fate would have it he survived and performed a free concert for the people of Jamaica.

What I admire about Bob Marley are his ideas behind the music he makes. I appreciate what he has done because he wouldn’t let anyone stop him from what he wanted to complete. His music comes to me as some of the most human lyrics I’ve heard from a musical artist, for example,

"JAH would never give the power to a baldhead
Run come crucify the dread
Time alone, oh! time will tell
Think you're in heaven but you're living in hell
Think you're in heaven but you're living in hell
Think you're in heaven but you're living in hell
Time alone, oh! time will tell
Think you're in heaven but you're living in hell".

He is some one we all can relate to.

In conclusion Bob Marley is legend. He is someone whose lyrics will never be forgotten. Not only are the lyrics tight, but the rhythm moves your soul as well. His albums are classic and will always be inspirational to youths, political prisoners, and everyone who believes in something all over the world.
