Raquel Medina

by Elsie from Woodland Hills

Raquel Medina was born to a mother with a disability due to polio at a younger age. Raquel was born the oldest of 2 children. By the age of 20 she was regularly taking care of me (as an infant) while my mother was at work. She had a hand in raising me until I was 6 years old. She later married and had two beautiful little girls. Unfortunatly she later divorced and had to find an apartment where she is currently living.

The reason that Raquel is my hero is because of the way that she is succeeding on her own. I admire how Raquel is persuing a Ph.D in Dentistry and is able to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Raquel has also been able to support herself and her two daughters, who are on the top of her list. She might not be living large, but she could be put in the middle class of economy.

Raquel is determined to become a dentist, but not one of those dentists that are on every other street corner. She wants to be a dentist who is highly recommended. She had been a full time student for about a year until she got divorced; she then had to be a part time student. Even as a part time student she was still determined to be a 4.0 student. But unfortunatly becoming a part time student backed up her schedule a couple years.

Since Raquel no longer has any one to support her and her family, she has to take it upon herself to maintain her family. A while before Raquel returned to school she worked for the dentist she is currently working for now. On top of the usual home bills she also pays for her school and all the supplies that she requires, which isn't cheap.

Even though I haven't mentioned Raquel's daughters as much as her education, she has never lost focus on them. Her oldest is eight years old and the younger one is six years old. Her daughters have and always will be her main priortity. Because they are all in school they hardly have any time to see each other so what they do is sit down at the table and they all do their homework together.

The reason I chose Raquel as my hero is not because she saved someone's life or because she pulled off a spectacular trick, but because of everything that she is doing with her life. She is going very far and will pass on her detirmination to her children. I could only hope that I can do as well as she is doing with her life, for myself.
