Jim Morrison

by Oren from Woodland Hills

Jim Morrison is my hero. Although many people might remember him for his fascination with drugs and alcohol and his knack for causing trouble he was also considered a hero to the youth of the nineteen sixties. He changed the way many people saw things, and had guts to speak out at a time when only few did.

James Douglas Morrison was born in the southern land of Melbourne, Florida in 1943. His father was a US Navy Admiral and the family was forced to move according to his occasional postings. Although Jim was a highly intelligent young man, he tended to slack off in his studies. He studied theatre arts at the University of California were he met Ray Manzarek a fellow student along with Robbie Krieger and John Densmore who would later become The Doors.

Jim had a very unique view on life and changed the way many people saw things. He said that people often pretend to be something they are not just to get someone to like them. He also questioned how people could love if they are afraid of pain. Many teenagers as well as adults at the time were inspired by Morrison and looked up to him as a hero.

Jim Morrison had guts to speak out about things and that is another characteristic which I admire abouth him. When the Doors were asked to perform "Light My Fire" On the Ed Sullivan show , it was requested that Jim not sing the lyric "higher" Jim went against the authority by singing it anyway. By doing this he showed people that you should have the right to express yourself through music or poetry.

Sadly on July 3, 1971 Jim Morrison was found dead in the bathtub of his apartment in Paris, France. Although he only lived for 27 years his music will be remembered and appreciated and he will live on and inspire many generations to come.
