Guitars in the Classroom is a non-profit organization that teaches educators to use music in the classroom to deepen and enhance core curriculum.  Founded in 1998 by Jessica Barron, the organization helps students learn to play guitar and write songs that help in classes that include English, math, science, social studies, art and physical education.

The non-profit group Playing for Change has a simple yet challenging mission: to connect the world through music.  Playing for Change won the 2010 MY HERO Media Award for the artistic video presentation that featured musicians around the world singing the Ben E King song, “Stand by Me.”  The organization’s co-founder Mark Johnson was on hand at Friday’s celebration to accept their award.

MY HERO Musical Director Stuart Pearlman and students from New Roads School provided jazz entertainment before the awards ceremony.  Following the ceremony, Creative Visions Foundation presented a screening of IMBA Means Sing, an award-winning documentary that explores the power of music and the impact of education by following a group of young performers in the African Children’s Choir on an international tour that will fund their education.  The feature length film won the first place award for Best Trailer last year at the MY HERO International Film Festival.  It also was an official selection at the 2015 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.
