Neil Armstrong

by Zach from Centereach

My definition of a hero is someone who is inspiring, daring and ambitious. Neil Armstrong fits this definition perfectly. Being the first man to set foot on the moon, you could imagine that he is regarded as legendary by many. This is why I, along with many other people, see Neil Armstrong as a hero.

Neil Armstrong is very inspirational person, especially in the field of astronomy. Being the first man to set foot on the moon, you could imagine that he is very brave and ambitious. He shows his pride while on the moon by planting the American flag on the surface. This is why I view Neil Armstrong as such an inspirational character.

Armstrong was fascinated by flight ever since he was a toddler. At the age of six, he went on his first airplane flight. His father stated that Neil enjoyed the flight more than anything. At about eight, Neil built his first model airplane, at about ten cents per plane. As he got older, he built larger airplanes, but at a higher cost. From this, you can tell that Armstrong dreamed to fly even from early childhood.

Neil was a hard-worker as a child as well. He got his first job mowing the lawn at a cemetery when he was just ten years old. He got this job so he could pay for his model airplanes, which were getting bigger and pricier. Neil was also a boy scout, and hiked twenty miles with his friends for a merit badge. He also took many extra curricular activities, such as the glee club, serving on the school council, acting in a play, playing for the school band, and playing in a jazz combo known as the Mississippi Moonshiners. As you can see, Neil was a hard worker who was determined to achieve his goals.

At 16, Armstrong graduated high school and went on to study aeronautical engineering, or the construction of planes. After completing three semesters of college, the Navy called him to active duty. He was sent to a flight school in Florida where he trained single-engine fighters. This was a very important step in Armstrong's future success.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued a challenge to congress to not only get men on the moon, but get them safely back to earth. Armstrong decided to accept this challenge. He felt that the nation's pride was at stake. He wanted America to be the leading country in the field of space, and he was ready to make that dream a reality. His launch was scheduled for March 16, 1966. This would be one of the most unbelievable days of his entire life.

While on the moon, Neil Armstrong planted the American flag on the surface of the moon. When he did this he said an extremely famous line - "This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This quote is looked at as one of the most influential quotes in astronomy, along with Neil Armstrong being one of the most influential men in astronomy.

Neil Armstrong perfectly fits the definition of a hero. As a child, he always aspired to fly. He pursued this dream throughout his entire life. His devotion allowed him to achieve the goals that he always wanted, showing that you can do whatever you want in life if you put your mind to it. This is why I view Neil Armstrong as such an inspirational man.
