Nancy Brinker

by Shyann from Marathon

Can one person really change the world? Many people argue "NO", but I believe if you put your mind to it you can do anything. Nancy Brinker never imagined herself changing the world. When her sister was on her death bed she asked her sister Nancy to make a foundation to help people like herself with breast cancer, she said "So that no women or man would die like she did, without knowledge of breast cancer". So in 1982, 2 years after Susan died, Nancy Brinker gathered 20 friends, a typewriter, and $200. And started "The Susan G Komen Foundation".(Nancy Brinker)

Nancy Goodman was born December 6, 1946. Parents of Marvin and Eleanor Goodman. (Nancy Brinker) She grew up in the small town of Peoria, IL with her sister Susan Goodman. (Nancy Brinker) As kids Susan being the oldest, and Nancy 3 years younger, they were best friends. Nancy's greatest influence was her sister Susan. Together they loved doing community service and helping people.

The first fundraiser for Susan G Komen Foundation was a Polo tournament and they invited First Lady Betty Ford, former breast cancer survivor. The second year they started Races for the Cure. Soon after in 1983 Brinker was diagnosed with breast cancer herself. Since 1983 more than 100 hundred people join the mission to find the cure every year. One of the fundraisers is a "Race for the Cure", they are a walk for 3 days, totaling up to 60 miles.

In the year 2011 alone Susan G Komen Foundation raised 47 million dollars for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. Since 1983-2013 they raised 750 million dollars. (Nancy Brinker) There has been over 100 races since 1983-2013. Over the years of the foundation has helped many people around the world. (Nancy Brinker)

I believe Nancy Brinker is a "Renaissance Women", because Nancy Brinker "is rebirth of spirit to push the limits of literacy, art, science, and technology for new hopes." She never believed she couldn't do it. Her mood is "One person can change the world", and she knows it is true because she's living her promise mission.
