Have you ever wondered why we have heroes of the United States of America? Well, these people are heroes because they are brave, strong, selfless, persistent, are leaders, are very courageous, and they remain calm when things seem really bad. For example, I chose Nathan Hale. He was a soldier in the American Revolution who risked his life for America and the colonists. He was strong, courageous, and brave. It's hard to be brave when you know what's going on and you know what the consequences would be. So he really was a true hero.

Nathan Hale was born on June 6, 1755 in Conventry, Connecticut. His father was Richard Hale and his mother was Elizabeth Strong. He was the 6th out of 12 children (9 boys and 3 girls) and they lived a Puritan life. Nathan Hale died on September 22, 1776 in New York City. Guards of the British general hanged him. In the American Revolution Nathan Hale went to spy on British troops. He had to figure out their plan and tell the colonists. Nathan knew that if he got caught he would be executed and hanged. When Hale was carrying the information back to the colonists he was stopped, searched, and caught by a British soldier. The soldier had proof that Hale was spying and should be hanged. Nathan Hale was strong, courageous, and brave. Nathan Hale died when he was twenty-one, but he lived a short, valuable life. Before he died he was asked if he had any last words, he stated "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." In 1773 before he entered the War he was a schoolteacher at East Haddam. Then he went to New London. When he was a teacher he taught regular classes, he also taught special classes for older people, especially older women who lived in town. He made a big difference on people's lives and made them smarter.

There are many heroic characteristics about Nathan Hale, but the most important one is bravery. Hale is very brave because he gave his life for his country and knew that if he got caught he would die but he did it anyway because he knew he would make a difference. Also he was selfless. He was selfless because he gave up his life for somebody else's life and let them live longer and they could've made a big difference. Another characteristic is he never gave up and was persistent. He was persistent because he never stopped fighting until he died and tried to get the info to the colonists until the last minute he was hanged.

In conclusion, Nathan Hale was a man who defended his country until his death. He made differences in people's lives and stuck with the ones he loved and cared about most until the very end. No one is braver than Nathan Hale even though he was only twenty-one years old when he died. Hale may have lived a short life, but he made every second count. Nathan Hale is certainly a lifetime hero to me.
