Nelson Mandala

I'm going to introduce my favorite hero who is a South African statesman. He was a brave man who was jailed for 27 years, He was a leader of the fight against the apartheid before becoming the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in a tribe. His surname was Madiba because he was very respected. He studied in Fort Hare, and then went to the University of Witwatersrand. In 1942 he got a lawyer degree.

He was jailed a first time because he was judged for treason but he was released in 1961. In 1962 he was jailed once again because he was an activist against the apartheid. When Nelson was in prison the whole world began to campaign for his release. He was finally released from jail on February 11th 1990. It was then that he managed to be elected president.

He was the first black South African to be elected President of South Africa. In 1943 he joined the ANC (African National Congress) for Racial Equality. In these years, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against the apartheid and for creating a democracy in South Africa. He called his nation : "The rainbow nation " .  He DIED on December 5TH 2013 in Johannesburg.

Nelson MANDELA is my favorite hero because he was a brave man, he was adventurous and a fighter. He reconciled the nation of South Africa.
