In honor of Nelson Mandela, I did research about this hero in “Biography Today.” I chose Nelson Mandela because he ended racial segregation in South Africa. Many people compare him to Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. because of his peaceful ways to protest issues.

Nelson Mandela had an ordinary childhood. Nelson Rolihlahla was born on July 18, 1918, in Umata, Transkei, South Africa. His parents were Henry and Nonqaphi , also known as Fanny, Mandela. Fanny was Henry’s third wife. His great grandfather was a Transkeian king.

Education helped Nelson Mandela become an impact on the world. Nelson Mandela attended Headtown Methodist Boarding School. He graduated from that in 1937. Afterwards he went to Fort Hare University, a black school, where he his studies introduced him to Marxism, the theory and practice of socialism. He was expelled from Fort Hare in 1940 for promoting a boycott. Mandela completed his undergraduate studies at Witwaterstrand University. He received his law degree from the University of South Africa. His education helped him become an important figure in history.

Nelson Mandela is a very famous person. He led South Africa from the apartheid as president from 1994-1999. He was the first black president of South Africa. He became president after almost twenty-seven years in prison. That is why he is compared to famous people such as Gandhi. The movie Invictus is about how Mandela used rugby to help unite the country. Those are just a few of his many accomplishments.

Nelson Mandela changed politics and the way of life in for many people in South Africa. He had a normal childhood. He got good education that helped him get where he is now. Nelson Mandela got rid of the apartheid in South Africa as president from 1994-1999. Nelson Mandela is my hero.
