Nelson Mandela once said "It always seems impossible until it's done", he said this because

everyone thought that to free South Africa from its racist vice was impossible. But Nelson Mandela proved them all wrong by freeing South Africa.  Nelson Mandela should be considered a heroic icon because he was an essential part in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

When he was younger, Nelson Mandela was intrigued by the sport of boxing. He was not interested in the violence, but was fascinated by the ability of one to protect himself. When he was younger he realized that boxing was an egalitarian, that is when you are measuring your opponent's strengths and weaknesses, you don't pay attention to their color or his social status. In the ring rank, age, color, and wealth are irrelevant.

There are a number of reasons for why I think Nelson Mandela should be considered persistent and selfless. Nelson Mandela saw the injustice of apartheid happening all around him in south Africa and realized that he must put a stop to it. He spent 27 years in prison, only getting one half hour visits every year, all because he was fighting for his people's rights. This shows that he was persistent and he wouldn't give up because he knew that he was doing the right thing. Nelson Mandela once said  "Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom". This shows that Nelson Mandela thought that getting rid of poverty isn't something that should be done, but something that must be done, which shows how selfless he was.

Nelson Mandela had a huge impact all around the world. He inspired generations to stand up against apartheid and fight for what is right. He showed the world that nothing is impossible when you persevere. Nelson Mandela freed South Africa and became their first president, helping inspire the rest of the world that anything is possible.

He should be considered selfless because he was a very charitable person, starting several charities. He was persistent because he endured 27 years in jail in three different prisons with horrible conditions, sometimes being forced to work for hours without food or water, and yet he still kept on fighting for the rights of black people. These are reasons why Nelson Mandela should be considered a real life hero.
