Nellie McClung

by Briar from Calgary

I want to leave something behind when I go; some small legacy of truth, some word that will shine in a dark place.

What does a hero mean to you? Who is your hero? My hero is Nellie McClung. One of the famous five women. She was born in Chatsworth Ontario, 1873. She and her family moved to Manitoba in the late 1880. By the age of 9 she started to learn how to read. Then by 1889 she graduated from what we call now elementary school. In 1890, at a Young Ladies Bible Class she met Annie McClung, who not knowing at the time would be her mother in law quite soon. Soon after she meet Annie's pharmacist son, Robert Wesley McClung, they married in 1896.

They had five children and in 1911 the family moved to Winnipeg where Nellie McClung continued her career as a social reformer, but she also joined the Winnipeg Political Equality League, a group of people to helping the women wage earners of the city. That's when the famous five got started. The famous five were five Canadian women who in 1927 asked the Supreme Court of Canada, or SCC, the question, "What does the word persons mean to you?"

The famous five womens names were Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, and Nellie McClung. They fought for womens rights. In 1927 they asked the Supreme Court of Canada or SCC the question what does the word persons mean to you? On 24 April 1928, Canada's Supreme Court said it's unanimous that women were persons.

Nellie McClung did not die a tragic death. She died of old age. Like many people, it was in her sleep. She just stopped breathing. She died on September 1, 1951 in Victoria B.C. On her gravestone it is carved "Loved and Remembered" which she is. That same gravestone is shared with her husband Robert Wesley McClung. Nellie McClung is a hero to many girls around the world including me because she was a fighter for what she believed in. That's way Nellie Letitia McClung is my hero.
