My hero would have to be Nancy Reagan. Nancy is loyal to her family, an inspiration to young people, and caring toward the people of the United States. Nancy Reagan was born on July 6, 1921 to Kenneth and Edith Luckett Robbins. She was named Anne Frances Robbins and her nickname was Nancy. In 1923, she moved to Bethesda, Maryland to live with her Aunt Virginia and Uncle Audley Gilbraith. She graduated from Smith College in 1943 where she majored in drama. She signed a seven year contract with MGM in 1949. That same year in the fall she met her husband, Ronald Reagan. Ronald and Nancy became Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Reagan on March 4, 1952.
The first reason why I chose Nancy Reagan as my hero is her loyalty to her husband. From 1967 to 1975, Ronald Reagan was governor of California. Nancy said “My life really began when I married my husband.” Nancy is mother of Patricia Ann Reagan and Ronald Prescott Reagan. She also said “I could be the wife I wanted to be…A woman’s real happiness and real fulfillment come from within the home with her husband and children.” I admire that she is so family oriented. Outside of the family, she cares so much about the teenagers and the young children of our country.
Mrs. Reagan is an inspiration to these young children. In 1985, Nancy launched Teens in Action booklet. This is part of the campaign against the drug use. She also hosted the first Ladies Conference on drug abuse in Washington, D.C., and in Atlanta, Georgia. Two stars who are influenced by Nancy Reagan, are Drew Barrymore and Gary Coleman. At a young age, Drew Barrymore did a lot of drugs and drinking. Nancy Reagan changed her life and helped Barrymore turn her life around. Now Barrymore’s career is skyrocketing. Gary Coleman also was influenced by Nancy Reagan. He was known as Arnold Jackson on “Diff’ rent Strokes”. After the show was canceled he suffered the after effects of being a child star. He went as far as suicide twice. Nancy Reagan had a conference for stopping the use of drugs. During the conference the two special guests were Gary Coleman and 13 year old Drew Barrymore. To me that really changed the perspective, of many people in the United States.
It is obvious that Nancy Reagan cares for the people of the United States. She has worked with numerous charitable groups, and also spent many hours with veterans, the elderly and handicapped people. She also supported the Foster Grandparent Program. I highly support this program because I have foster grandmother. She was voted one of the ten most admired women in the world. On October 26, 1982, Nancy’s mother Edith Davis died. Throughout Nancy’s life Edith supported many charitable organizations with Nancy. In fact, Nancy is still working with organizations after the death of her beloved 93 year old husband Ronald Reagan on June 5, 2004.
In conclusion, Nancy Reagan is still and will always be my hero. Nancy is loyal to her family, an inspiration to many young people, and cares for many people in the United of States America.
