Nick Vujicic

by Kiana Green from Riverview

Some people look at disabled people as lesser humans or less qualified; that's plain wrong or delusional thinking. Hopefully, this information can help dispel these sorts of inaccurate perceptions by highlighting an individual named Nick Vujicic, who definitely didn't let any of his disabilities prevent him from greatness. Nick is important to me because he showed me and people all around the world that you can overcome obstacles and have victory over the challenges of life through faith in Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior and Son of God the Father, who gave spared His life on the cross so that anyone who believed in Him would have everlasting and abundant life by His grace. Nick is a hero to me and many others, both those who are in some way disabled and even those who aren't disabled, such as me. Nick fully embodies the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ and shows it not only by what he says, but the way he lives a life of inspiration and hope.

Nick, an Australian Christian evangelist, preacher, writer, and actor, was born with Phocomelia, which is a rare disorder characterized by the absence of legs and arms. He was born with one deformed foot, which he calls his "chicken drumstick," because of its drumstick-like appearance. When he was younger it was harder for him to cope with everyday obstacles. Some of the greatest struggles he had to deal with early in life were being bullied by his fellow classmates, and also coping with extreme depression felt by being so "different." All his life, he struggled mentally, emotionally, and physically. Once, he even almost committed suicide by drowning himself in a bathtub full of water at the age of ten. By the grace of God, he had a revelation that that God had a better plan for his life, so he stopped trying to destroy what God made him to be in this world. Eventually he came to terms with his disability.

Although Nick had his moments of weaknesses and often felt like giving up, he definitely didn't let his disability stop him from achieving success in many areas in life that would seem impossible to many. During secondary school, he was elected vice captain of Runcorn State High School in Queensland and worked with student council on fundraising events for local charities and disability campaigns. As for his other awards and achievements, in 1990, he won the Australian Young Citizen Award, in 2005, the young Australian of the year award, in 2007, he received the Australian Well Done Award through the Kingdom Assignment organization, in March 2008, he appeared in an interview on the 20/20 American television show hosted, he won the Best Actor award for his debut performance in the Butterfly Circus. Nick has gone on to make several appearances on television, radio, and speaking in a variety of public venues from small to large audiences. Why do so many people flock to see and hear from Nick Vucijic? This is because he is truly an inspirational individual, who according to many cultural and world perceptions, is not expected to be able to accomplish so much given his obvious disabilities. He also got married and has two boys.

Nick is now a Christian evangelist and a motivational speaker. He talks and mentors to children, teenagers, and even adults, by sharing with them about his struggle and how he pushed through it with the help of Jesus Christ. It doesn't hurt that he also has a great sense of humor and can easily be considered by many to be a bit of a "comedian." Many people today now understand why and how Nick pushed past the limits on which he thought he and many others thought he could never do. Nick also is an avid and skilled swimmer, fisher, soccer player, golfer. He also likes to listen to music and spending his time with family and friends. One of the most powerful personal statements he ever made was, "I was never crippled until I lost hope."

Nick is my hero because he went through the impossible in life, kept his faith in Jesus Christ, and gives hope to others by letting them know Jesus will also help them through anything in life. His example shows us that no matter what a person's disabilities are, which we all have some form of a disability, we can achieve great things in life no matter the difficulties we face. He also made a strong case for those who are considering suicide that life is actually worth living, but that we can't do it alone. Lastly, when we live the life Jesus called us to live we inspire others to also live victoriously.
