Ozzy once said, "I have a genuine love affair with my audience. When I'm on stage they're not privileged to see me. It's a privilege for me to see them ("Ozzy Osbourne Quotes"). John Michael Osbourne, known as Ozzy, was born on December 3, 1948, in Aston, England. Ozzy was born as one of six children of Jack Osbourne, a toolmaker, and Lilian, who worked in a car components firm. The Osbourne's live a modest, middle class life. As a child, Ozzy dealt with a number of learning disabilities like dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder. He received little formal education and left school at age fifteen to work. He started out doing a number of menial jobs like plumping and being an apprentice toolmaker. Ozzy also ran into some trouble with the law when he was a teenager. He burglarized a clothes store and sent six weeks in Winson Green Prison ("John Michael Osbourne").

Osbourne is best known as the lead singer of the popular hard-rock group Black Sabbath. After Ozzy was released form Winson Green Prison, he was asked by several acquaintances to sing for a new band. The band, originally called Earth, played a mix of blues-inspired rock. The group did okay, but it wasn't until they started experimenting with hard, amplified sound, negative reviews from music critics, but became a huge commercial success. Driven by the success of their first album, the band released their second album Paranoid within a few months that would later characterize the heavy metal genre that caught the attention of producers. Unfortunately, (or fortunately), the moniker Earth was already taken so, the band changed their name to Black Sabbath, a reference to the classic Boris Karloff film ("John Michael Osbourne"). The band released their first debut album, Black Sabbath in February 1970.

Many of the songs in this album, including "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" became the signature songs of this band. After the release of 'Sabotage,' Osbourne was having some serious issues with drugs and was expelled from the band. Following, Ozzy started his solo career in 1981 with his debut album, Blizzard of Ozz. The album was a huge success and went multi-platinum is the U.S. Starting from the mid - 1990's, Ozzy and his wife, Sharron, started organizing Ozzfest, an annual festival which features various bands playing different genres of music like heavy metal, alternative metal, hardcore punk, and gothic metal. Ozzy won a Grammy Award for the Best Metal Performance for the track "I Don't Want to Change the World," in 1994 ("Ozzy Ozbourne").

Ozzy is known as the "Godfather of heavy metal ("Ozzy Osbourne")." He laid both the musical and artistic groundwork for the heavy-metal movement in modern rock and roll. When Ozzy isn't rocking, he's donating to charities and organizations. He has supported and followed thirteen organizations including his wife's charity, the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program ("Ozzy Osbourne: Charity.") Ozzy also contributed to the reality show movement when he and his family starred in their own reality TV show, The Osbournes'. It aired on MTV in 2002. The program became the most viewed show on MTV in its first season and ran until March of 2005("Ozzy Osbourne").

Rock and roll influenced daily life, fashion, attitudes and language in a way few other social developments have. The rock and roll lifestyle was popularly associated with sex and drugs. Many of rock and rolls' early stars were known as hard-drinking, hard-living characters. The life Ozzy Osbourne lived fit into this stereotypical rock and roll lifestyle.

Extra Info

Ozzy Osbourne is important to me because he started a new era of music. I think that he's inspirational because despite his alcohol and drug problems, he still managed to produce music that went multi-platinum.
