On January 9, 1954 a young African American girl was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi. This little girl will grow up to be an incredible woman who will impact the world greatly with her kind heart. She was physically and mentally abused by her mother, and ran away at the young age of thirteen. Turned down by juvenile detention homes, she was sent to live with her father in Nashville. This is when her life changed forever; she became a reporter and anchor and eventually became the worldwide sensation of a woman known today as Oprah Winfrey. In January 1984, she got a job as a host of WLS-TV’s failing talk show “AM Chicago”. In less than a year’s time it was the most popular show in Chicago and later was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Ever since, this show has influenced, enlightened and helped her viewers. She was even titled “America’s Icon of Joy” by ABC TV. In 1991, Oprah initiated a campaign to make a national database of convicted child abusers. President Bill Clinton signed the “Oprah Bill” in 1933, making it a law. Oprah knows abuse too well and has worked hard to try and stop it. Oprah said in an interview that “A part of my mission in life now is to encourage every other child, who has been abused, to tell. You tell, and if they don't believe you, you keep telling. You tell everybody until somebody listens to you…I don't want another child to be afraid of saying, ‘This is what happened to me’.” She is an inspiration to all and has come so far from where she began. She became the first African American to be a billionaire in 2003 and she shares her wealth with others who are less fortunate.

In 2002, Oprah spent 21 impacting days in South Africa for Christmas. She then created ChristmasKindness to give the children in South Africa a full day of hope, joy, and toys, with the help of Nelson Mandela. For over 12 days thousands of South African children joined Oprah and her loving team for Christmas. Everyone danced, tents were risen, and food was given to all. The children received backpacks full of books, school supplies, toys, and clothes. "For as long as I have a voice in this world, my promise to children who have no voice is that they will be seen, they will be heard — because they matter,” Oprah said.

“The ChristmasKindness project was created and financed through my private foundation, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. Now, through our Angel Network which is my public charity—your charity—you also have the opportunity to contribute to our mission to support, educate and uplift children whose lives are devastated by AIDS. It is my promise to you that your money will be spent to make a difference in a life that needs it."
Oprah later created the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. The school has the best teachers in South Africa and with the high technology used there, Oprah teaches from her home in Chicago. The students are taught to be the best they can be and to be leaders. "Education is the way to move mountains, to build bridges, to change the world,” she said. “Education is the path to the future. I believe that education is indeed freedom. With God's help, these girls will be the future leaders on the path to peace in South Africa and the world." Oprah also encourages anyone and everyone to make a difference in the lives of the children and donate.

Oprah Winfrey is a passionate woman who cares about everyone and wants to help to the best of her ability. She came from a terrible childhood of cruelty and turned into a superwoman. She gives back and doesn’t take anything for granted. She is a true hero for her courage, responsibility, determination, modesty, and kindness. She has her mind in the right place and follows her heart. She has impacted many lives with her love, she has saved many lives with her care, and she has improved many lives with her courage.

Oprah is one of the most amazing women to have ever lived. She has given so much and asks for so little. She has impacted thousands and has influenced them to help as much as she has. She has changed the world in more ways than one, and is a true hero.
