Oprah Winfrey

by Devin from Laguna Beach

My Hero is Oprah Winfrey. She is my hero because she does a lot of great things to help improve this world. Some of the things she does include charity work, donations, and most of all giving people second chances. She just recently opened a school in Africa for little girls. Things like this are the reason someone is a hero. A hero to me is someone who you can look up to. One-way of knowing she is a hero is by thinking about the children in Africa. How do you think they are feeling about her and what she has done to help them? They probably think of her as a hero. I learned about Oprah from her talk show and later learned how much of a giver she is.

Oprah is known as one of the most giving celebrities. She donates to several charities and opened one of her own in 1998. She also supports treating HIV and AIDS. She also supports children and women charities and rights. She also supports animal rescue, and disaster relief. As you can see Oprah Winfrey dedicates a lot of her time to others which gave me a reason for her to be my hero.

Oprah Winfrey lives in many places, currently. Even though she has a lot of homes and money that doesn’t stop her from donating and using that money wisely and kindly. She was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi on an isolated farm. Her name was suppose to be Orpah from the bible, but because of the difficulty in spelling, she was called Oprah since she was born. Her unnamed parents separated, leaving her in the care of her grandmother. Because her grandmother was strict, she learned to read at 2 and a half years old. She skipped kindergarten because she told her teacher she belonged in first grade. She then skipped second grade as well. At age 6 she was sent to Milwaukee with her mother and two half-brothers. At age 12 she was sent to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. She was happy there and started making speeches at gatherings and church. When she was paid for a speech she knew she wanted to be “paid to talk.” She was sent back to live her mother. Where her mother lived was dangerous and men her family trusted sexually abused her starting at age 9. Her mother would work strange jobs and couldn’t supervise her children. When she was with her dad she was a wonderful student. She was in drama club, debate teams, and student council. In a speaking contest she won a scholarship to Tennessee State University. She was miss Black Nashville and Miss Tennessee in her freshman year in college. When she was offered a T.V. news job, she turned it down twice before her speech teacher talked her into the job offer at CBS. The show was seen each evening on WTWK TV. She was Nashville’s first African-American female co-anchor of evening news at the age of 19.

Oprah lived poorly. When she lived with her mom it was dangerous and unsafe. She was affected because she was sexually abused and was never given any rules. With her dad she had to go above and beyond with school. This caused her to be happy and safe. She was successful when she was with her dad.

Oprah is important to me because she inspires me. Not only does she inspire me but she inspire many others too. She has done so much for everyone and cares and wants to help everyone in every way possible. Oprah, in my opinion, is one of the most giving celebrities because she is known for all her giving and helping and that’s one of the reasons she is a celebrity. She is a star who is different from others. She not only donates to charities but also creates her own. I look up to her because she had a successful life her father and was strong enough to get through the hard things with her mother. She also had many accomplishments that I hope to one day achieve. Oprah is an important woman to society and is inspiring. Even though she had some rough times during her childhood she pulled through and is a professional, smart, and an accomplished woman. This is why Oprah Winfrey is my hero.
