Dr. Earl Owen is well, you guessed it, a Doctor. But he is also a Surgeon and a Professor. He was born in 1934. He is a father of 4 and a Grandfather of 2. When he was young he knew he wanted to be a doctor and a surgeon. At that time there were 18 doctors in his family.
He is a leader in Microsurgery. Microsurgery is instead of looking at the patient through the naked eye you have to look through a microscope to see what you are doing and you use tiny little tools. The microscopes are so powerful that you can see nerves, veins and arteries.
He pioneered in the use of Microsurgery. The Government would not give him any money to research Microsurgery, so he had to raise money all by himself! He is responsible for introducing the use of Microsurgery in 17 different counties.
Because of his hard work to get Microsurgery working, he was able to be the first doctor in the history of the world to be able to successfully sew back on an amputated finger of a two year old boy in 1968.
Things steadily progressed over the years and in 1998 Dr. Earl Owen was part of a team who successfully re-attached a whole hand.
