Edison Arantes do Nascimento was born October 23, 1940 in Três Corações, Minas Gerias Brazil, South America. He was named after American inventor Thomas Edison. His parents are Dondinho Arantesand mother Celeste Arantes. Pele was the oldest of two siblings. Pele visited the White House on the 10 of September 1986 and saw Ronald Reagan and the Brazil President Jose Sarney. He had 3 sons and 3 daughters. His parents decided to remove the 'i' and call him Edson, but his friends nicknamed him Pele. He was one of the best ''football'' player ever. First he joined the Santos Club at the age of 15 years old. 1956 and retired in 1974. Then from 1975 to 1977 to make a attempt to popularize the sport in the United States. By then he he had scored 1,200 goals and led the Brazilian National team to titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970. When he was at his youth career he played for the Bauru team from 1953-1956. For his senior career he played for the Santos from 1956-1974 and the New York Cosmos from 1975-1977. Lastly he was on the Brazil National team from 1957-1971.
Pele won his first major title 1958 as the team won the competition Pele would finish the tournament as top scorer with 58 goals in the games. Pele was listed in the Guinness World Records for most career goals scored in "football":1283 goals in 1363 games and the Most World Cup Winners' Medals. Pele had 92 hat tricks (3 goals per game). Also he was the the greatest "football" player to have ever played the game, the golden foot: 2012. He also won the Athlete of the Century 2 times: 1981 and 1999, was the FIFA Player of the Century, the South American Football player of the Century and he was the South American Footballer of the Year:1973. He was inducted into the American National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1993. He lead his All-Time Team to the FIFA World Cup in 1994 he was the FIFA World Cup (Beat Young Player) and won the FIFA World Cup (Silver Boot), World Cup Silver Ball and the FIFA World Cup Goldan Ball (Best Player).He was on the World Team of the 20th Century. In 1959 he won the Copa America Best Player. Pele once said "The bicycle kick is not easy to do, I scored 1,283 in 1,363 games and ONLY 2 or 3 were bicycle kicks". Pele had very special talents. He dominated the "football" field. He was very fast, skilled, athletic, powerful and accurate. He was fast because he could outrun people. He was skilled because he can do moves other people can not do. He is athletic because he can do a bicycle kick. Lastly he is powerful and accurate because he can kick goals from far away. Pele has published seven autobiographies, starred in documentary films, and has composed musical pieces including THE ENTIRE sound track for the film "Pele" in 1977. In the 1981 film "Escape to Victory" which was about an attempted escape from a World War II German P.O.W camp. Which means prisoner of war. In 2005 Pele received a life time achievement award from the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and in June of 2006 he helped start the FIFA world cup finals. Pele also was the guest of honor at the world's oldest football club in Sheffield. Lastly he was put in many arcade and video football games.
Fun Facts-- Pele got suspended for 2 days for punching somebody in school in the face for calling him "Pele''!!! In America Três Corações is called "three hearts" In some places soccer is called football. Pele is still alive today. He is 5 ft. 8 in. tall
