Philip Rivers

by Patrick from Austin

"Well, home is anywhere, it doesn't matter where we live because we have the faith." Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers is a hero to me because he is a selfless person that has donated a large sum of money to programs that will help benefit people in need. This act of giving large amounts of money to those in need is very generous and selfless because he is giving the money he earned to those who are less fortunate than himself. This is especially good because there are a lot of professional athletes who use their copious amount of money on themselves and don't think twice about giving it to other people. Those athletes end up spending the money on expensive mansions, cars and other costly materials. But, Philip Rivers isn't like that. Philip Rivers has, in fact, donated more than one-million dollars to programs that help foster children. Philip Rivers and his wife, Tiffany, have created an organization called the Rivers of Hope Foundation. This foundation's goal is to help unwanted and orphaned children find homes.

Another reason for Philip Rivers being my hero is because he is a great quarterback and I am a big fan of football. But one of the more important reasons that he is my hero is because he is a professional athlete that has maintained a strong faith life. This trait of remaining reverent while being an athlete in a pro sport is somewhat hard to find. And that is why I think Philip Rivers is a good role model because he is able to be a good athlete and a dedicated Christian at the same time.

Philip Rivers was born on December 8th, 1981 in Decatur, Alabama. He went to Athens High School and played football there as well. When it was time for college Philip Rivers decided to go to North Carolina State. When he was there the one thing that he constantly remembered from his mom was to go to mass. Philip Rivers said in an interview at the Catholic Men's Fellowship Conference in Phoenix "When you go to college that's when the faith becomes your own. Your mom and dad aren't waking you up and reminding you 'Hey this is a good day to go to confession.' It's up to you." (life teen) During his second year at North Carolina State he married his wife Tiffany. "From the inception of their relationship they made their faith the center and foundation." (rivers).

Then in the 2004 draft, Philip Rivers was selected by the San Diego Chargers. In the 2005 season Rivers led the San Diego Chargers to a 14-2 record. Luck continued to be on River's side when he lead the Chargers to the AFC championship in 2007. While in the NFL Philip Rivers always remembered to keep his faith close with him. He is even able to keep up with the sacraments during the season because of team priest that travels with the team. If there is one thing that I have specifically learned from Philip Rivers as a role model it is to always remain strong with your faith, even if it is hard to do.
